Life with Boys
Follow me! You know you want to.

The past few weeks have been HECTIC!

Roy and I made plans to do some last minute shopping on the 23rd of December.  I had it all planned - shopping, lunch (an early anniversary outing at my favorite place [The Melting Pot], and then home.  Well, the boys knew we had plans, but Dean was so sweet and just wanted to be with Mommy and Daddy.  He started to get that look on his face - you know the one that says “if you leave me, I might lose it!”  So, I said he could come with us.  NOT quite what Roy had in mind, but in the end, he was fine with it.  Dean was a wonderful little helper!  Roy did his thing, and Dean and I looked for a few more things for his brothers.  He helped me pick out a very nice cardigan for Corey, and we found a silly Invader Zim hoodie for Addi.  He carried the bags for me, and we enjoyed a little cookie while we waited for Roy to meet us.  Little did I know, Roy was trying to get in touch with me so I could try on some shoes so he could figure out what size to get me… the cell reception in the mall is ridiculous!  I mean, there is none!  But we finally touched base, and I ran to Lady Foot Locker.  I teased Roy that he was trying to tell me something with his gifts to me, but he got me exactly what I wanted - a few more pairs of compression pants for jogging, some cold gear shirts (including the EXACT Under Armour black pullover I wanted!), and some brand new running shoes!  Purple - love them!

Christmas was great!  This entire holiday season - from Thanksgiving through Joe’s birthday on January 15th - I promised myself I would just… chill.  No stressing about this or that… it will get done.  Keep Thanksgiving dinner simple… done!  And we all had a great time!  Same with Christmas.  The boys wanted pretty straight forward things this year, so that is what we did.  Christmas dinner was a shrimp boil - Roy baked, and my parents came over.  That was great, the kids loved it… everyone was relaxed, and we just had a great time visiting - though my sister’s crazy dog was here. I think it is fair to say that we are all glad she (the dog) is back home with them.  My carpet was not happy, nor was my little dog.

New Year’s Eve was low key.  We had a nice ham dinner, again Roy baked Blackberry Cobbler (SO good!), and then just chilled.  Addi, Corey, and Joe made it to midnight, but Hayden and Dean did not - although they put up valiant efforts.  I kissed my husband at midnight, and we rang in the New Year’s snug in our room.

And then New Year’s Day, we got up and went to my parents for another nice visit.

Tomorrow the boy’s go back to school, and then Wednesday Roy is back at work.  Thursday our baby turns 4 (Angry Birds Cake… he is gonna love it!), and on January 15 Joe will hit the big 1-6!

It’s been a crazy few weeks, and I am sure the next few weeks will be hectic as everyone settles back into their routines, but I’m looking forward to an exciting 2012.  Hope you are as well!

Finally, got all the Christmas shopping done.  Roy and I made plans to go out Friday to finish up our shopping.  LONG day… hit the mall, Costco, had a great lunch at my favorite restaurant (The Melting Pot), on to Best Buy, back to the mall, hit Harbor Freight Tools, and finally Wegmans… what a day!

Dean asked to go with us, and our little guy was a champ.  Though as soon as we got on the road to head home, he was out like a light.

And now, the presents are all wrapped, we ate our traditional Christmas Eve dinner (Pizza), and watched a movie (Gremlins).  The kids are getting tired, as am I, and hopefully they will get to bed soon, so Santa can fill their stockings.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Holiday Season!

I missed Wayback Wednesday, so here’s a Throwback instead!  My parents bought me this for Christmas of 1980, the year my little sister was born.  We lived in Korea, and I can’t imagine how my dad ever found this for me, but I loved it.  My mom would set it up for me in the kitchen while she was cooking and let me put water in it.  Although my Barbies always had to skinny dip as I lost their bathing suits.

What I really wish I could buy for Roy.

I admit it, my nails look like crap, but for some reason I just love the Kermit inspired color pictured here.  Think I might ask the boys for this for Christmas.  The Miss Piggy inspired color is pretty awesome too.

Now that Thanksgiving is over…

And can I just say, I had a great time this year!  The turkey was wonderful, though it didn’t taste much different between this year’s brine and last year’s, company was great, and I was cool, calm and collected.

Ok, so now that Thanksgiving is over, it’s on to Christmas.  We did venture out on Black Friday, and we got a few things we wanted.  Though I just went for the deals, not necessarily to get Christmas presents - we got the Kinect for our Xbox (great deal - $99 with four games!), and Roy bought me my present early - the Kindle Fire (LOVE IT!). I did some shopping on Saturday morning online and got a few things.  But this year we decided to do things a bit differently.

I always spend too much on the boys for Christmas.  I buy them tons of things, many they aren’t even that interested in, and rack up the Amex (in my defense, I do pay it off every month… but why overspend?)  So, this year, I found a few things each of them wants, and I am keeping it simple.  With five kids overspending at Christmas is easy, but again, if I buy them things that they don’t really want or are not interested in, well, I’m just wasting money.

So, this year I want to get them fewer presents and spend more time as a family.  Eating nice dinners together, maybe going for a hike if the weather holds, watching movies together, playing games, etc.

Don’t get me wrong, we still plan on getting them some awesome gifts, but we decided to do what someone else suggested to us.

I was talking to a lady at our local cable office, and she has four daughters.  She said she used to do exactly what I did - overspend and then January and February was too tight.  So, she and her husband decided to scale back a bit during Christmas and do more for each of their birthdays.

Granted, Joe and Dean were both born in January, but I thought that made sense.  At Christmas, it’s about family for us.  We are all together, and I would rather them get four or five presents that they really want, like, and will use, than 20 that are just ok.

I already have some cool things planned for birthdays.  Dean - ok, I’m not sure what to do for him.  He wants so many things, but I’ll figure something out.

For now, I’m just happy that I am actually almost done with a few people!  I mean, I’m done buying gifts for them.  And then I hope to do some things I haven’t done in the past - bake a ton of Christmas cookies with my guys, plan something cool for Dean and Joe for their birthdays in January…

Who doesn’t love Black Friday? Well, I wouldn’t say I love it… but the past few years we have been able to get exactly what we set out to get, so I certainly LOVE that.

This year, I actually really liked what Target did.  They opened at midnight, so we just stayed up late and hit that sale (Well, we did hit Wal-mart first, but nothing jumped out at us).  We got to Target about 12:05 and went to the back of the line.  That was actually fine with me, until some women in front of us started smoking.

Now, I say live and let live.  You want to smoke, be my guest.  I won’t judge you for it, BUT can you show SOME common courtesy in certain situations.  You were in line with a HUGE group of people, 99.99% of them were NOT smoking (the few that did light up went and stood in the parking lot; I mean except these buttheads).  Do you really need to light up and subject all of us to that?

HELL NO, you don’t!  And I admit, I opened my mouth.

“You know, not all of us want lung cancer.” I said, certainly loud enough for them to hear.

One delightful young lady turned around and informed me that I did not want to go there.

“What?” I looked at Roy in confusion, “Umm… I already went there.”

Yes, at this point I was pissed.  And yes, I could and probably should have handled that better.  But since she turned around and told me that there were no babies in the immediate vicinity, well, she apparently did not see a problem with her cigarette smoke.

I mean with that logic, how could I argue?  Again, you want to smoke, not my business.  And in certain situations, we expect to be around it (a bar, a nightclub, a cigarette store, the local high school [Ok, that one was a joke… sort of]), but standing in line to get in a store?  Come on… people with asthma have every right to get those same deals as you do.  People WITH children (though why you want to bring them out in that mess… NOT ME!) also have that right, people that have issues with smoke, people with hair that do not want to smell like smoke all day, etc., etc… all I’m saying is, use some common courtesy.

Anyways, we finally made it to the front of the line, and once we got in, I SOOO wanted to ram smoking lady in the butt with my hard won cart.  (GOT the last regular cart… OH YEAH!) But alas, I realized that was a childish reaction, and I didn’t see her anyways.

So, we made our way into the store, and I immediately look to see what sweaters are on sale.

“Chris!” Roy is beckoning me over to him, “Come on, we can come back to this later.”

“Fine, Fine,” I say hurrying over to the cart, “I already found what I wanted.”

A lovely wrap sweater… course it was for me, so that kind of defeated the purpose of me going out in the middle of the night.

And then, he got sidetracked looking at a TV.

“Honey, we don’t need a TV.”

“I know, maybe Corey…”

“I am not spending 400 on a TV. He has one, he can buy it himself.”  Sorry, that is a bit more than I spend per child at Christmas, maybe his birthday.

“No, I meant Dad.” Roy corrected himself. Corey was hoping for a smaller TV, but Roy’s dad wanted a decent sized one. “He might like this one, and they only have two left.”

True, so, I let him do his thing (his parents had just made it into the store, so he didn’t have to do much at that point), and I went off in search of the Xbox Kinnect.  Roy caught up with me, and we got sidetracked by the Kindle Fire’s.

“You know you want one.” He looked at me.

I did.  I really did.  I have an old Kindle that I absolutely love, but I really wanted this new one.  All the games, the ability to surf the web, the color.  And the price!  I love Roy’s iPad, but it was pricey. And beyond my needs. I wanted something simple.

An employee came over to ask if we needed help.

“Yes, can we get the Kindle Fire?” Roy asked her.

Usually, for something like this, he hesitates.  Since it is for me, he wants me to be sure that I want it, but this time… he just knew me better than I knew myself.  She said, sure, but that we would have to stand in the electronics line, which was winding around the electronics department into men’s clothing.  But, since she put it up by the register on hold for us, I knew I would get up there and get my purchase.

“I’ll go stand in line.  Can you look at toys?”  I asked Roy.

“Yeah. What am I looking for?” He asked me.

“Hayden wants Legos. And well, I don’t know…” I guess anything that caught our eyes.

Off he went in search of Legos and ‘well, I don’t know…’, and I got in line.

Before I knew it, my inlaws and my niece were done wandering around and came to keep me company.  The line moved SOOOOO slowly, but it moved.  When I turned the corner, Roy came up to me with an empty cart.

“Nothing?” I asked him.

“Yeah, none of the Legos are on sale. And I couldn’t find the Leap Pad for Dean.”

“Hmm… ok, your turn.” He said and took my place in line, and I went to see what I could find.

OHH… The Xbox kinnect!  They have it!  I grabbed one of the last three that were sitting out.  The games were pretty empty, but I grabbed some Spongebob surfing thing, and the Kinectanimals (I don’t know if that’s what it is called, something about animals and panda bears.)

“Ohh… you got one too!” As I ran up to the cart with my find, I saw Roy holding one too.

“No, mom found it.”

“Oh, cool!  Are you guys getting one too?” I asked.

My mother in law remembered me saying I wanted to get one for the boys, so she grabbed one for us not knowing if we had found it.  I took my place in line, and he went out to put the extra Kinect up and check out the games.

I spent more time in line, hanging out with my niece and my father in law, we crept forward.  Eventually, my in-laws, gave up, and we parted ways.  Roy and I stood in line for about 30 more minutes, but eventually it was our turn, and I got my Kindle Fire.

We paid for it and grabbed a few more things.  We went to pay for the rest of our things, and though the line extended the entire length of the store, it moved very quickly.  We paid for our purchases, no problem. Got great deals. And decided to go to IHOP.

It was nice. Late, but nice.  It reminded me of when we were dating.  We would go out to the club, do some dancing, and then go to Denny’s or somewhere for a late night meal.  It was nice. We hung out and shared some pancakes and an omelet.  And when we finally hit the sack, it was 3:45 AM.  WAY past my bedtime!

I woke up at 8:15 to little faces wide awake.

“Time to get up, Mama?” It was a question, but Dean was already wide awake.

“Ok, sure.” I said, sitting up and rubbing my eyes.  I saw my Kindle Fire out of the corner of my eye.  Ohh, yeah… time to get up!

I turned it on and giggled when it booted right up.  Set up was a breeze. How cool am I?!

“What is that, Mama?” Dean cuddled up next to me.

I showed him, and he oohed and aahed over the bright colors.

“Ohh… Mom, that is neat!”  Hayden came over and sat next to us.

“I know, right?” I smiled at him, “Daddy bought me a new Kindle.”

“Really?!” Hayden was excited, “Can I have your old one?”

I told him we would see.  My excited chatter woke up my sleepy husband, who helped me sync things up.  We went downstairs, had breakfast, and around noon, we left the house to meet Roy’s parents for lunch.

And when we got home, I realized, I didn’t get many presents!  We gave the boys the Kinect early, and we all had a blast playing it last night.  Dean is so cute, jumping around and trying to pop the bubbles on the game.

Oh, well… I still have a month to go.

Crap, I better get moving!

Stood in line for this for over an hour - Roy got it for me as an early Christmas gift… and I have to say:
SO WORTH IT!  I love it!  Thank you again, my love. You called this one!

I have an older Kindle. I think it is 2G, not sure. And I was looking to update at some point.  I think I want this one!
