Life with Boys
Follow me! You know you want to.

I can’t believe how fast the year is going by… March 5th already!  The kids keep telling me how many days until my 38th birthday (9!), and Addi will be a teenager in 13 days (13 until he’s 13).

The boys had a 3 day weekend this past weekend and that completely threw everyone off.

I was feeling frisky Sunday morning, so I got up took a shower and came downstairs to make pancakes for everyone.  I can’t tell you how wonderful that was!  No kids running around yelling. No one rooting around in my pantry trying to sneak snacks. Just me and my music.  When the pancakes were ready, I did something I’ve always wanted to do - I grabbed one of my big pots and a huge wooden spoon, walked over to the bottom of the stairs, and took spoon to pot.

“BANG! BANG! BANG!” It wasn’t quite as loud as I thought it would be, so I made up for it, “GET UP!”

Addi was the first one down.

“Can you go get your brothers and Dad?” I asked him.

Addi ran upstairs, and, soon enough, the two little boys were walking down the stairs.

“Yummy! Pancakes!” Hayden’s eyes were huge, and he was so happy.

“I buy them.” Dean told Hayden.

“MOM!” Hayden suddenly looked scared, “I’m late for school!”

He is so funny.  So conscientious, and worried about getting things done just right.

“NO, sweetie. Remember you had no school Friday.”

“Oh, yeah.  Cool!”  And he and Dean dug in.

The older boys waited for Roy to get downstairs.  Dad finally came down, and we all had a lovely breakfast.

And then the fun began…

I never realized just how many DVD’s we had.  How many games… it’s crazy!

“Honey, what are you trying to do here?” Roy came over to me.

I was sitting on the floor, games, folders and movies spread around me.

“We just have so many movies.  I want to see what we have and put aside what we don’t want anymore.”

And so we went through everything, “You’re getting rid of The Mexican?”

“Roy, when’s the last time you actually watched that movie?”

“Yeah, but it’s good.”  It is a good movie, but we haven’t watched it in years.

Roy likes to keep movies that he enjoyed at one point in his life, even though he knows he will never watch them again.  But to his credit, he let them go.

“WHY didn’t I buy Cars on Blu-Ray?” I asked him.

“I don’t know, honey. Why didn’t you?”  Roy refuses to speculate.

It took us about two hours, but, in the end, we got everything straightened out and have about 25 movies (maybe more) for the next yard sale.

Now, if I could only find out who took my Jason X movie?

I’ve always been a morning person.  In high school, while my friends slept Saturday away, I was up by 8 doing my thing.  When I swam, I was up by 5, but that’s a whole other life.  Even when I stopped swimming, I got up early.  My body was programmed to get up at 5, so I tossed and turned for a bit and usually was able to fall asleep for a few more hours.  But inevitably my eyes crept open around 7:30-8, and I figure why waste the morning.

Being a morning person makes it easier for me to get up and get moving during the school year.  When I’m sick and have to drag myself out of bed (unless Roy gets up for me, but I don’t like to waste my good will on that!) mornings are rough for everyone.  I snap at the kids, I fuss at the dogs, and everyone boards the bus or drives off in a mood, similar to mine.

Corey is a big help in the morning, him being a morning person like me.  If I tell him that I’m not feeling well, he tries to help with Hayden, and that usually staves off the bad moods.

But my favorite day of the week is Saturday.  I still get up early, usually around 6:30 or 7, but since the boys don’t have to be up-alarm clocks are off, I don’t have to drag Hayden out of bed, and I can enjoy my coffee and my Harvest Peach Yogurt.  (Bought that one on accident and didn’t want to waste it-boy is it yummy!)  I can watch one of my shows in peace.  (Mommy!  I don’t want to watch this!  Can’t we watch Spongebob!)  After breakfast, I take my dog out so he can do his business, and then we come back inside and I do the dishes while he eats his breakfast.  When I am done, Shinobi (or Porkchop as Roy and the boys have taken to calling my chubby little pug) and I cuddle on the sofa for some more HGTV.  (I watch the shows on this channel all the time and yet my house STILL looks like a disaster site!)  My coffee is warm, and I love being able to finish it as the sun is coming up.

And just when I am starting to get bored I hear the pitter patter of little feet upstairs-or if it’s Roy or Corey the pitter patter of huge feet.  Time to start the rest of the day.

But Sunday…No, Sunday I let myself sleep in.

I like my coffee first thing in the morning.  My favorite is Island Coconut Fair Trade Coffee.  I would have ONE big cup (I limit myself to one a day, except on the rare occasion) with some bacon, hash browns and french toast stuffed with sweet cream cheese and topped with some sliced strawberries!  YUM!
