As I mentioned in my previous post, this month’s issue has some good articles, or rather in my previous post I wrote about an article I enjoyed. Here are some more tips Good Housekeeping shared with us this month, some good, some….well, here they are:
“The Four Greatest Haircuts of All Time”-I have had all four of these at one time or another in my life, and I agree wholeheartedly with their number one pick-The Bob-It has so many different incantations that one will work for anyone, yes anyone…even men. Long bobs, short bobs, bangs, no bangs…you can find one to fit your face. Number two-The Shag-some people may know it as The Rachel, this is a layered cut. Simple sure…if you don’t mind styling your hair. If you are a wash and go gal, like me…this one can look raggedy pretty quickly. Number three-The Pixie-here they show it as a rather long razor looking cut, whereas the pixie I think of is very short, giving some people that pretty waif look, while giving others (me) that butch I am too lazy to fix my hair look. And finally, Number four-Bangs-I am currently sporting these with a long layered bob. When I was younger, my mom would cut heavy bangs on me, with long hair, and in my pictures, I see this shiny curtain of hair, and these big, brown eyes peeking out from underneath them….while I don’t see that same shiny mane now, I am liking my new bangs. Now, GH likes to say it is a magazine for moms, and while I like all these haircuts, with the exception of the bob, none of these are wash and go hairstyles. Perhaps they need an article for us lazy moms…you know the ones that don’t want to fix their hair for 30 minutes while baby is spraying cologne on the dog.
“Lift Your Glasses” Now, I am not a dinner party kind of person..though I wish I was. So I don’t own any of those little charms that you can put on wine glasses so that people know whose is whose. GH has a DIY version….draw simple flower shapes on cardstock (You can purchase these at any craft store), cut them out, fold in half and snip a hole in the center, etc, etc….then you are too draw on them with a paint pen, using different patterns of course. Good idea sure? But do we expect our guests to then count the number of paint puffies on each one? Let’s hope no one has more than two glasses as do you really think liquored up Larry is going to remember that his glass was the one with six dots on each petal? Nope, go buy a few 50 cent charms and call it a day.
“Jump In The Pool”- Pregnant women who did water aerobics for 50 minutes at least three times a week were nearly 60% less likely to need painkillers during labor, says a Brazilian study. I worked up until I was about 38 weeks pregnant with my fourth, and I coach swimming so obviously I was near a pool…but apparently running back and forth on the pool deck yelling at kids to get their butts in gear, does not count as water aerobics…I bit the bullet and asked for some meds.
“On Your Side” I am all about trying to go green, and I have mentioned some of the things we try to do in my previous posts. Looking to my bathroom was on my to do list, but here I found out that bamboo towels…ain’t so green! In order to turn bamboo into a soft, weaveable yarn the raw fibers go through a process that isn’t really good for hte environment. To dry off fastest go for towels that are 100% cotton. And if you want to keep said towels fluffy and absorbent, don’t use dryer sheets or fabric softeners. Both inhibit cotton’s natural absorbency.
And finally, organic milk costs more, but it can last up to four times longer if it is high heat ultra-pasteurized. I checked and the kind I use for my little one’s is! NICE!
Tomorrow: Does this issue of Parents have anything useful for all us parents?
