To another poster, let me clarify

I give my kids LOTS of credit.  Know why I am able to do that?  Because I work with their teachers to make sure my kids are on top of things.  BUT, if they have a problem, I won’t gloss over it.  Fair enough?

I used Shakespeare and Chaucer as two examples.  I could add others, but chose not to.  Bottom line, IF a child doesn’t understand what you are doing in class, there IS a problem!

Not all teachers are reading teachers, BUT if you are an English teacher, I think it’s pretty darn important for you to pick up on problems your students are having WITH READING.  I don’t expect a 12th grade English teacher to take time out to teach someone better reading skills, what I would expect is for them to identify a problem.

And let me make this pretty clear-I can read a medical journal.  I can sound out the words…doesn’t mean I understand it.  So making them READ it and making sure they UNDERSTAND it aren’t always the same thing.

And umm…yes, HELPING a student get through something and learn to understand it is MY POINT.  I would have hoped you picked up on that before you tried to be nasty.

Are you kidding me?  IF someone writes a good paper, by all means grade it accordingly.  My point WAS don’t give a kid an “A” if it wasn’t earned.

To be clear-NOT every child will go to college, but most people WILL have a job at some point.  And while your boss might not give you a “B” on a paper, HE/SHE WILL make you do it over if you don’t do it right.  You WILL NOT get a promotion if you don’t earn it, and you MIGHT get fired if you keep messing up.  So, while you don’t get a letter grade, yes you DO get graded in many aspects of your job.

And I wasn’t asking you to police my kids casual conversations, but then again perhaps you would know that if you actually read what I wrote.  On the other hand, IF you as a teacher allow kids to use slang, than I can see why kids have problems.

And teachers, I say this to all of you, I WAS NOT being belittling, demeaning, condescending, or rude, but this poster sure was rather rude to me.  I was asking for your HELP, because I happen to care about the kids you are teaching! And funny, I thought I said I don’t think all teachers do this…oh wait, I did!

Being able to understand what you read IS a basic skill.  Being able to write so that someone understand what you are trying to get across, IS a basic skill.  Those are the basics I was talking about.

As a parent, I care deeply what my kids are learning, and it’s funny…teachers can say our kids are messed up, they don’t care, etc, etc…but a parent asking for teachers to remember NOT all kids are up to pare means I am belittling them?  Maybe that is part of the problem, and sadly that has NOTHING to do with the kids, and more to do with teachers not being able to communicate with parents.

And real quick…I DO NOT THINK ALL TEACHERS DO THIS!

If someone is familiar with my blog, they should know how much respect I have for teachers (there is a part of me that wants to be one myself!).  They know how much I love the written word, and how important I think an education is.  I believe in what I said in my original post, but that doesn’t mean I don’t respect educators and what they try to do.

And in the end, I was taught that if something isn’t understood, we should ask questions.  So, if I get blasted for my opinion, fair enough, but I shouldn’t get insulted if my opinion wasn’t clear, and no one took the time to ask for it to be made clear.
