Dean's New Song

Reflections of/on 2011
I don’t keep a running log of everything amazing that happens during the year, or rather I do, but it’s only in my head, so dates are not exact… -Corey started his senior year of high school,  Joe is in his Sophomore year, Addi seventh grade, and Hayden is in second grade. -Goes back to the first item - I ordered the first of five senior pictures for my guys.  The first of five...

What's Important in a Marriage
In reading the book The Magic Room, I got to thinking about my own wedding. Growing up, I wasn’t the type of little girl to play ‘bride and groom.’  I didn’t really play house. Instead, I convinced my friends to play tag or hide and seek.  When I got older, I found I actually had more in common with boys - I was an athlete, I liked to debate, I preferred jeans, makeup...

The Magic Room
The Magic Room is a book by Jeffrey Zaslow about a “magic room” in Becker’s Bridal.  Becker’s is a bridal store in the small town of Fowler, Michigan.  In the Becker family for four generations, this store is more than a simple dress shop - it is a place where mothers and daughters bond over the ritual of selecting a dress for what is to be one of the most important days in...

Aspire for Greatness
digidad: We are watching Zookeeper. Silly movie, but the kids are enjoying it. Hayden says he wants an elephant like the one in the movie, so I tell him to become a zookeeper when he grows up. A few minutes later… “I want to be a zookeeper.” Hayden says. “I want to be a monkey.” Dean announces.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
Finally, got all the Christmas shopping done.  Roy and I made plans to go out Friday to finish up our shopping.  LONG day… hit the mall, Costco, had a great lunch at my favorite restaurant (The Melting Pot), on to Best Buy, back to the mall, hit Harbor Freight Tools, and finally Wegmans… what a day! Dean asked to go with us, and our little guy was a champ.  Though as soon as we got on...

Hear My Song, Mama
“Hi, Mama.  You wanna hear my song?”  Dean asks me this about 20 times a day.  And I never get tired of hearing his song… “Twinkle Little Star.  Where Are You?”   He is actually trying to sing!  It is so cute… And now, he is watching Epic Meal Time. I would rather listen to him sing…

Been Feeling My Age Lately
Why is it that men just get better, and I just feel older? I find myself in a strange situation - at 37 (almost 38), I’m healthier than I have been in 15 years.  I’m more at peace with who I am, I accept my faults, even embrace them to a point, and yet the past few days, the fact that I am almost 40 is getting to me. Again, it’s weird… I don’t feel almost 40.  I...

Things I Have Learned...
1) You should always know your Target! - Roy is watching something about guns and shooting, and this little pearl of wisdom comes from the guy on the show.  ALWAYS know your target, that way you won’t shoot a family member, a friend, or a neighbor.  So, those are my options?  Shoot a paper target, a family member, a friend, or a neighbor?  (Ok, I get what he is saying, but the WAY he said...

Being Gay In Our Family
I have listened to, seen, read, and heard a lot about gay families lately.  States want the right to block adoptions by gay couples (won’t even get into what bull crap this is!), but what I have found so lovely to read are stories about families with gay children where things are just… normal. I read an article on the Huffington Post about a young man that dated his partner for over...

WOW! Wait a Minute here...
Ok… ok… I know The Lost Boys is an ‘older’ movie.  (It pains me to say that though. I’m sorry, the movie is still great!) But trust me… It doesn’t need to be remade. It doesn’t need to be “glee-made’ either. Hey, I like Glee too.  How cute is Puck?  Artie… great voice!  But you DO NOT assign them roles in The Lost Boys. I’m...

Your Momma...
Your momma is so fat when I told her it was chili outside, she ran out with a spoon! I don’t know if Addi said that correctly, but I sure thought it was funny.  That is a part of our dinner ritual.  One of the boys says something silly, and the other boys jump on it as a way to get Roy and I to laugh.  I’m a lot easier than Roy.  I get started, and before I know it, I’m out of...

Will You Marry Me?
Just want to give a shout out to all the men and women that don’t just marry the person they love, they also marry the children that might come along in that package deal. I am not sure if Roy envisioned himself marrying someone that was older than he is (by a whopping 3 1/2 years!) with two little boys.  Someone that at 25 was already divorced, didn’t always get along with her...

Living the... Dream?
There is a site that we like to visit daily to check out their shirt of the day.  They had one a few weeks ago that said “Living the Dream.” But then Dream was crossed out and “Plan B” was written instead.  Funny, right? We certainly thought so, but then it got me thinking.  I am living my Plan B, or at least the Plan B I had for myself at 17. When I was in high school, I...

Put The Smackdown...
…on my son this morning.  NO, I didn’t smack him around… just a verbal smackdown.  We are pretty relaxed when it comes to the boys in regards to curfews, etc.  Corey is a good kid - excellent grades while holding down a job, respectful, etc.  He respects our rules.  We don’t allow them to go out a whole lot during the school week, but come Friday or Saturday, we...

I'm Thankful For...
-my boys.  I mean that’s a no brainer right?  I’m thankful for ALL my boys, my biggest guy (my amazing husband), and my littlest guy, and all my sweethearts in between. -my health.  I’m almost 38, and I’ve never felt better.  MAYBE, when I was 17 and on top of my game as an athlete, MAYBE.  But I was also an unhappy, overworked, exhausted teenager.  Sure, I was ripped (I...

I Was Moved *SPOILER*
I love my TV shows.  Certain shows I never miss. Other shows I watch if I’m bored. But I try to see the mid-season finales as that is when we get a ‘mini-cliffhanger.’  Two in particular I absolutely loved. -Supernatural - This is a double edged sword for me.  Jim Beaver wrote my favorite non-fiction book, Life’s That Way.  And ever since I read that, the man can just do...

Why...
Why… -do the kids always have to go to the bathroom right before the bus gets here? -do the kids think school lunches are like ‘so awesome, mom,’ but the healthy, fresh food I make for them is like ‘gross and yucky?’ -did cable constantly stop my DVR recording a minute before my show was to end, thereby making me miss the cliffhanger? (So glad to get rid of...

An Open Letter to Teens
Dear Teenager, Hi, I’m your mom, or rather I MIGHT be your mom.  Maybe I’m your Dad, or your Grandmother, your Grandfather, Aunt, Uncle.  I’m the adult in your life that is raising you. I love you. I want you to understand that first and foremost.  Whatever you do, whatever you might say to me, no matter how many times you yell that you hate me (or mutter it under your breath),...

A Sweet Older Brother
Just want to put this up so that Joe knows how much I adore him for this.  Dean adores Joe, probably because, out of his brothers, he is the most patient with him.  Lately Joe has been very indulgent of Dean’s pleadings to play with him.  Dean would occupy all of Joe’s free time if he/we let him. As I have said before, there’s nothing sweeter than watching a teenager take time...

Thank you!
blueser replied to your photo: I admit it, my nails look like crap, but for some… I have the Miss Piggy on now. You have to layer it over red to get the effect just FYI :) Thank you so much!  I have no doubt I would have bought the green and then been disappointed if it wasn’t as bright as the pictures I’ve seen.

Really, Supernatural? Really? And some other...
If you watch the show, Supernatural, and you watched Friday’s episode, you know what I’m talking about. Bobby! ‘Nuff said. I am trying to run 3 or 4 days a week.  I’m trying to push myself to get ready for the Mud Run in May that I want to do. BUT, I do not want to push myself with an 80 pound dog coming at me barking and growling.  That’s all he did, but it still...

An Open Letters to Parents
Dear Parents, I’m not an expert.  I don’t have a lot of initials behind my name. Hell, I didn’t even finish college!  What I do have going for me is that I AM a parent.  I think the advantage I have now versus 10 years ago is that my kids are all over the place age wise - 17, 15, 12, 7, and 3.  I have one that is getting ready to finish up high school, and one that hasn’t...

The Early Morning Calm
I’ve written about this before. I’m a morning person.  I often get up early and toss and turn in bed.  Finally, I give up (mostly because I don’t want to wake up Roy), toss the covers aside, and start my day.  Today my day started at 5am.  I don’t HAVE to get up until about 6 to get the boys up and ready for school, but I just couldn’t sleep.  Probably guilt over not...
