Sucking Up
Just yesterday Corey asked me who was better at sucking up - he or Joe? That’s an easy one… when Corey is sucking up, he sounds fake.  Simple as that.  Joe doesn’t often “suck up” as Corey calls it.  Instead, Joe might occasionally bust out a really sweet compliment, and to be honest, he always sounds sincere. But Corey’s question makes me wonder: Are the...

Don't Use That Tone With Me!
I don’t know how many times I have said this in the 16+ years I have been a mom.  10,000?  20,000?  Maybe more.  I have numerous variations on this phrase: Check it, Check your tone, Watch that mouth, Watch your mouth, Don’t talk to me like that, I’m your mother, not your friend, Show me some respect, etc., etc. But they all mean the same thing: You better watch what you say to...

What will scare me?
Addi wanted to see the new Piranha movie, and I admit that Ving Rhames is one cool dude, or at least he was in Pulp Fiction.  I have usually enjoyed Elizabeth Shue, and hey… it’s about angry man-eating fish, right?  So I figure why not?! The original Piranha, coupled with the book “Jaws,” scared the crap out of me.  Jason didn’t bother me growing up, nor did...

WHY do you say that?
And by “that” I mean, “Parenting a gay son/lesbian daughter.”  Is it different than parenting a straight child?  If you have an answer, I would love to hear it. When my oldest son was about 14, Roy and I sensed that perhaps something was up with him.  I say “up with him” because I don’t necessarily think he was NOT normal.  So, instead of wondering, I...

Iron Man Saga
Dear Iron Man, My torment continues!  I had to run to the store yesterday, and of course, we headed to the “Man Now Store” (Target.  Walmart is the “Man now and Food Store”).  Dean was so hoping to find the “green Man Now” (Titanium Man) or “bad guy” (Ivan “Whiplash” Vanko)… but it was not to be.  I figured that I might get out of...

I DID IT!
As I mentioned a few weeks ago, we joined Golds Gym on Black Friday.  Serious about weight loss, Roy and I have been really good.  We go between 3-6 days a week, we have tried some new classes, we laugh, and we lift weights together. For me, it is all about consistency, and having someone to work out with really helps.  Roy encourages me, makes me laugh, and makes working out bearable - dare I...

Today was the Day...
Today was the day for errands! Though in our quest for Iron Man to recognize Dean as his biggest fan, we do have another tidbit… well two actually.  I had some errands to run today, and of course as soon as I started to get dressed, Dean noticed and asked if we could go to the store. “Go store, Mama?” He asked while tugging on my robe. “Why do you need to go to the...

It was a cold and crisp morning, Iron Man...
It was a cold and crisp morning, Iron Man and I could hear my little boy creeping down the stairs.  I put my coffee mug down and sat back on the couch waiting for him to crawl up onto my lap and curl up into my chest.  Dean rounded the corner, and I looked at him - his chubby cheeks were rosy from sleep, and his soft brown hair was sticking up around his face. “Hi, Mama.” He said to...

Another Updated Plea to Iron Man
Dear Iron Man, To be honest, I don’t know what day it is in our son’s obsession with you.  I have lost track of the days, but not of how many Iron Man toys we have (every single one available).  My little boy turned three recently and was given a gift card to Target.  His first request was an Iron Man toy, so my husband and I gamely looked, and imagine our sadness when we could not...

A Quiet Strength
When I speak of “a quiet strength,” I am not necessarily talking about physical strength, as I believe my husband has enough of that as well.  I am talking about mental and emotional strength here.  My husband has told me more than once that I am the strongest and smartest woman he knows.  Well there is a reason for that… him. I’m not saying he makes me smarter.  Nope,...

You know what's awesome?
Finding the perfect t-shirt on sale.  I got this t-shirt at Target a few weeks ago for $4.00.  It’s a lovely shade of heathered gray, it’s soft (so it feels like your husband’s old broken in t-shirt) it skims over my little tummy, and it has sleeves in a contrasting color.  But best of all….all that for less than five dollars!

KitchenAid Pasta Press = not good
We received the KitchenAid Pasta Press for Christmas. Great gift… we thought! It still is a wonderfully kind gift, but we finally got around to putting it to use this evening, and BAM! One of the pieces broke as the pasta was feeding through. After checking out reviews, we see that this is not a surprising event. Much of the device is plastic, and the locking ring (a piece that takes on the...

Splurge Day
As I have mentioned, I am trying to lose some weight.  Part of it is vanity, part of it is feeling pretty darn great after a good workout, and part of it is because I want to live for a good long while. I will say for the most part, my new “diet” isn’t so bad.  Today, Roy and I made an AWESOME Tuna Steak with Olive Tapenade.  Lots of protein, simple to make, and really yummy!...

The Healing Power of Touch
I don’t think I noticed it growing up, perhaps I didn’t even really think of it until something happened the other day (more on what happened in a bit), but my parents weren’t the type to give hugs, to take your hand if you were upset; they just weren’t touchy feely.  Oh, don’t get me wrong, I know they loved my sister and I, but when we needed a hug we usually got a...

We just swapped the site from a secondary account to a primary. This change will cause us to lose all of our followers and liked posts - and any likes you’ve applied to our posts. If you were previously following our site, we hope you will...

I've Had It!
Today is a snow day, and while the kids are happy, Roy and I have already had it and it is barely noon.  Snow days mean it is freezing outside….freezing!  Ice blankets the driveway, and the roads are nothing but black ice at this point.  We didn’t get much snow in our neck of the woods, but we got…rain, I guess it was and the temperature caused everything to freeze.  Needless to...

The Simple Things in Life
There was a time when I thought pleasure was measured by how much you spent.  I derived more pleasure from an expensive purse than a cheap purse.  A nice pair of shoes made me happier than a pair of flip flops. And yet I was never satisfied!  If owning these beautiful things made me so happy, why wasn’t I satisfied once I purchased them? And then I got older.  Don’t get me wrong, I...

A Love Affair with Food
I think the first time Roy and I ever went out to eat without thinking of the price was when we went to Disney World in 2003.  We had saved for this vacation for about six months, and I was probably more excited than the kids.  I planned and planned, made reservations for character breakfasts, etc.  But I also made plans for Roy and I to spend some time together.  Corey was only 8 at the time, so...

Just a quick note...
We posted a photo of Dean’s cake, and I just want to say, it was great! We got it from a local source, so if you live near us and need a birthday cake, USE this great small local business! Dean loves Ni Hao, Kai-Lan, and is particularly found of HoHo, the little monkey friend of Kai-Lan.  We asked if a HoHo cake could be done, and sure enough… at 1 pm that’s exactly what...

You have $10!
I have expensive taste, I admit it.  (Roy does too, but that’s another post, for another time!) I also have a husband that earns a good living, and enjoys indulging me.  Lucky girl, huh? BUT, there are a few things I want that Roy will not pay for!  Imagine my outrage when I present him with these requests: 1) Another baby - Yes, we have five boys, I know… big family!  I have a...

Well, I made up my mind! Susan G. Komen...
I won’t deny that the Susan G. Komen Foundation has raised a lot of money,  but it would seem they are also SPENDING a lot of money, not on breast cancer research, but on bullying smaller charities. The Komen Foundation says that smaller charities shouldn’t use “for a cure” in the name of their charity as it might confuse people.  I don’t know about you, but when I...

Life IS Serious!
Roy often tells me that I don’t laugh enough, that I take things too seriously.  Sometimes I overreact (ok, I often overreact) and ask questions after my anger has dissipated, and sometimes that gets me into trouble.  On the other hand, I’m here to say that LIFE IS SERIOUS! That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t enjoy it.  75% of the time I love the life I lead, and the other 25%...

Hitting the Gym
I’ve had five kids, that’s a fact of life.  It’s also a fact of life that I don’t have a personal trainer on speed dial, a personal chef and a nanny to help me lose the baby weight within 10 days of delivery.  And that’s ok.  I feel overweight sometimes, sure, and I know I should lose a few more pounds, but my boys are happy and healthy, and Roy and I enjoy a...
